The Northern Cardinal is one of the most popular backyard birds in the United States. They can be attracted to feeders with Black oil sunflower seeds, safflower seeds and peanuts (unsalted). The male sings in a loud, clear whistle from a tree top or other high location to defend his territory. |

The Northern Cardinal is a medium-sized (8-9”) songbird. |
| DESCRIPTION | The male cardinals
are bright red, with a black face and chin and a pointed crest on the
top of its head and a red bill.
The female is gray-brown on the back with a red tinge to the crest, wings and tail and a bright orange-red bill. |
| NESTING | Clutch
size ranges from 2-5 eggs, which are incubated in 12 to 14 days. |
| RANGE | The northern cardinal can be found in most parts of United States east of the Rocky Mountains and down into Texas and Mexico. They do not migrate. Sometimes in extreme cold, they may have some southern movement. |
| HABITAT | They habitat near the edges of forests and woodlots. They are also a familiar sight in orchards, farms, suburbs and backyards. |
| DIET | They mainly at seeds, grains, fruits and insects. |
